This 3 or 4-day intensive course is of interest to those dealing with water supply and treatment. It is intended for consulting engineers and scientists; water utility personnel including superintendents, managers, and operators from moderate size and larger utilities; engineers and scientists from state and federal water regulatory agencies; and engineers and scientists from industries related to drinking water treatment. Fundamentals and applications are covered in the course as well as current issues focusing on the Long Term Enhanced Surface Treatment Rule, the Disinfectants-Disinfection By-Products (D-DBP) Rule, Enhanced Coagulation for Removal of TOC and DBP Precursors, Control of Cryptosporidium, and UV Disinfection. Those who attend the entire Institute will earn two Continuing Education Units (CEU’s).
About the Instructors
|James K. Edzwald is Professor Emeritus at UMass Amherst. He has taught graduate classes in Water Chemistry, Physical and Chemical Water Treatment Processes, and Design of Water and Wastewater Facilities. He has more than 40 years of professional and research experience in water treatment with emphasis on coagulation, dissolved air flotation, filtration, natural organic matter and control of trihalomethanes and Cryptosporidium. He is the technical editor and chapter contributor to the forthcoming revised edition of AWWA’s professional handbook on Water Quality and Treatment. For the prior nine years, he served as an editor of the Journal of Water Supply: Research and Technology – Aqua.|
David A. Reckhow is a Professor in the Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Program at UMass Amherst. He has more than 30 years of research and professional experience in water treatment with emphasis in natural organic matter, disinfection by-product control, and ozonation. He is a co-author of the widely used book, Ozone in Water Treatment: Applications and Engineering and a contributor to AWWA’s Water Quality and Treatment.
John E. Tobiason is a Professor and Director of the Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Graduate Program at UMass Amherst. He teaches graduate level courses in Particles in Water, Drinking Water Treatment Processes, and Design. He has over 30 years of research and professional experience in water supply and treatment, with emphasis on particles in water, coagulation, and water filtration. He chaired the AWWA Research Symposium on Particle Characterization (1999) and was Chair of the AWWA Water Science Research Division Board of Trustees from 2004-2007.
The course is held every year at the Hotel Northampton in downtown Northampton, Massachusetts, located in the scenic Connecticut River Valley. Northampton is served by major airlines through Bradley International Airport, north of Hartford, Connecticut, an approximately one hour drive.
