Ahlfeld Presents Paper on Innovations in Groundwater Management

Professor David Ahlfeld presented a paper at the Groundwater Summit of the National Groundwater Association held in Denver Colorado April 11-14. He reported on recent research at UMass which demonstrated that substantial reductions in the energy used for pumping groundwater can be obtained by careful design of groundwater pumping and injection strategies.

The analysis is conducted using simulation and optimization models and was applied to a site in California where annual savings of several hundred thousand dollars were found to be feasible.  Dr. Ahlfeld was co-author on two other papers in which models were used to manage groundwater to limit streamflow depletions in New England and Wyoming.
